Have you heard of Hellraiser? No not the general term meaning a person who constantly causes trouble around him, but the movie Hellraiser. It was based on Clive Barker’s book The Hellbound Heart. Origins aside, what may prove more interesting to you Halloween costume seekers out there is that it features the Cenobites – fearsome extra-dimensional creatures. Though they were once human and still look humanoid in form, they are far removed from you and me. The movie got some serious horror acclaim, and 7 sequels were filmed, yet it is the first one that proves the most iconic.
Clive Barker brings forth a vision of horror in the film Hellraiser, the first and original. Putting the plot aside, the Cenobites come into our world on their quest. Their apparent leader is “Pinhead”. This is not to denote his lack of intellectual prowess, but rather referring to his actual state of having dozens of pins stuck into his head. Aside from that, his head is grooved with a grid, and it is at the intersections of the grooves that a pin lies. He wears a black coat, with its chest torn and showing some of his ribs. Butterball is another of the Cenobites. He is portly indeed, but you can forget about associating him with Santa Claus.

Butterball possesses loose skin on his head and neck, such that the skin lies in overlapping flaps. He wears a black coat, and hanging from his waist are leather flaps holding several gruesome weapons. That’s not the worst of it though. The belly
portion of his coat is cut open, and he has a vertical slit down his abdomen, with hooks attached to the opening and to the coat, as if to hold the slit open. Of course, there’s gore. Then there’s Chatterer, and true to his moniker he chatters rather than speaks. Which is only quite appropriate as his face does not look like it belongs to someone who can speak.
His face is a twisted mass of flesh, and of the parts of the face we can usually recognize, only a ghastly approximation of a mouth remains. He has no lips, and the tissue around his gums is held back by hooks and a contraption mounted to his head. As if that was not enough, his tight bodysuit is slashed at the chest and has a vertical opening at the abdomen. Through the abdominal opening, we can see a huge wound, haphazardly sewn closed. The slashes on his chest have cut into muscles which are visible through the torn fabric.

Though there are other Cenobites costume, these three are among the earliest to appear in the series, and they certainly are some of the most horrific. You can immediately tell that they are not here to make friends, and are more likely than not to go off on a bloody, gory rampage – which suits the Halloween setting just fine. Their motivations vary according to the medium they appear in, and there are quite a few canonical discrepancies as to their behavior, but what remain unchanging throughout their incarnations are the horrors that they embody and their terrible appearances.
These costumes are not too difficult to put together except for their most iconic features. Anyone can get a coat and slash it up, but how many can produce real-looking prosthetic scars? What more a head full of pins? Truly, you would do much better buying these costumes rather than attempting to put them together yourself.
